It detects the note onsets in the first 30 seconds of your recording, then measures which beat grid they fit best — testing every tempo from 30 to 300 BPM and preferring the one where the most musical weight lands on the beat.
An honest caveat: this measures tempo from the notes it can detect, not from a drum track's transients. Steady, rhythmic recordings read cleanly; loose or tempo-shifting material gets a rough estimate that says so, and a recording with no detectable beat gets an assumption labeled as one — never a confident wrong answer.
