Drop a song here to find its key

MP3, WAV or M4A, up to 25 MB and 10 minutes.

Your file never leaves this device — it is decoded and analysed in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. Only the first 30 seconds of music are listened to, which is usually plenty and keeps it fast.

Questions, answered

It detects the pitched notes in the first 30 seconds of your recording, builds a histogram of which pitch classes dominate — weighted by how long and how hard each note is held — and matches that against the profiles of all 24 major and minor keys. The best match is the answer you see.

An honest caveat: automatic key detection is a strong hint, not gospel. Clean, pitched material reads well; a song that borrows chords freely or sits between the relative major and minor will be labeled uncertain rather than confidently wrong.
