Lead Sheet Transcription Cost: 2026 Prices

A lead sheet is the cheapest thing a human transcriber writes: one melody line, chord symbols above it and lyrics under it. It is still not cheap, because the transcriber has to hear every chord change and fit every syllable, and nearly every service prices it per minute of music with a minimum order. Here are the published rates, what they come to for a real song, and when you can skip paying for one.

Published lead sheet prices, September 2026

Every figure comes from the service's own page, read on 16 September 2026, in US dollars.

Read the small print on those rates

My Sheet Music Transcriptions quotes two ranges. Its main pricing page lists vocal lead sheets at $15–29 and instrumental lead sheets at $12–23 per minute. Its dedicated lead sheet pages say "from $19–29+" for vocal and "from $19–30+" for instrumental. Plan on the higher figures until you have a quote. The site also says its rates depend on difficulty, density, song length and instrumentation, and it offers "5-20% discounts for bulk orders".

Music Notation Hub's $39 is a floor, not a price. Its lead sheet page says the price depends on "melodic complexity, rhythmic difficulty, and harmonic density", plus audio quality and add-ons. Errors "are corrected at no extra charge".

Notable Score gives one number and a cap. Its pricing page gives the $30 starting figure and says it listens first, then gives "an estimated cost range" and "a guaranteed cost cap". It doesn't publish a per-minute rate.

PraiseCharts is a different model. It arranges worship songs "for which we can obtain copyright clearance", then sells the chart in its catalogue. The custom fee "is a priority fee", and "You still must purchase the sheet music from our website". If you wrote the song, it says you own the master files. Our guide to a song not on PraiseCharts goes through that route.

What a lead sheet costs for one song

Take a three-and-a-half-minute verse–chorus song with a sung melody. The arithmetic is ours; the rates are from the table above.

RouteCalculationCost
Music Notation Hub, low end3.5 × $18$63
Music Notation Hub, top of listed range3.5 × $25$87.50, more if the "+" applies
My Sheet Music Transcriptions, pricing-page range3.5 × $15 to 3.5 × $29$52.50 to $101.50
Notable ScoreQuoted per pieceFrom $30, with a cost cap
PraiseCharts, melody lead sheetFlat fee plus chart purchase$135–180 plus the chart

The minimums only bite on short pieces. At $18 a minute, anything under about two minutes and ten seconds costs the $39 floor at Music Notation Hub; at $15 a minute, anything under about three and a quarter minutes costs the $49 floor at My Sheet Music Transcriptions.

A songwriter with a ten-song album is looking at ten quotes of this size, which is where the bulk discounts and the question of whether you need lead sheets at all start to matter.

Lead sheet or piano score: the price gap

A lead sheet is the least notation that describes a song. A piano score writes out the accompaniment too, and costs more for it.

Music Notation HubMy Sheet Music Transcriptions
Lead sheet$18–25+/minVocal $15–29/min
Piano$19–24+ easy, $25–34+ average–advanced, $35–49+ difficult$22–24 easy, $26–37 average–advanced, $38–52+ difficult
Piano & vocals$35–50+/min$19–45/min

Order the lead sheet when other musicians will build their own parts from chords: a band, a worship team, a singer's accompanist. Pay for the piano score when the exact piano part matters. Our guide to making a lead sheet from a recording sets out which to use when, and the wider cost of transcribing a song covers every score type.

What pushes a lead sheet quote up

From the factors the services themselves list:

  • Harmonic density. Music Notation Hub names "number of chord changes". A song that changes chord every beat takes longer to chart than one that holds each chord for a bar.
  • Melodic ornament. Runs, slides and melismas all have to be notated, and a transcriber has to decide how much of a singer's phrasing belongs on the page.
  • Lyrics. Music Notation Hub prices on whether lyrics are included. My Sheet Music Transcriptions says its standard vocal lead sheet includes melody, lyrics and chords, and that it can adjust the price for more (backing vocals) or less.
  • Audio quality. A demo with the vocal buried under guitars costs more to hear through than a clean voice-and-piano take.
  • Rush. Both per-minute services offer faster delivery on request.
  • Extra files. At Music Notation Hub, MIDI and MusicXML are add-ons. My Sheet Music Transcriptions lists them as included, along with "up to 3 free transpositions" on vocal lead sheets.

The cheapest lever is the recording you send. Our guide to hiring a music transcriber covers the brief to send and the questions to ask before paying, and how long transcription takes covers deadlines.

Do you need to pay for a lead sheet at all?

Many songwriters order a lead sheet because they believe the Copyright Office needs one. For an unpublished song, its deposit requirements page lists "lead sheet or sheet music" or a "phonorecord" as acceptable, with "one complete copy" required. A clear recording can be the deposit. Whether a particular deposit covers everything you want to claim, such as a piano part that isn't on a lead sheet, is covered in is a lead sheet enough for a copyright deposit, and beyond that it's a question for the Office's guidance or a lawyer, not a price comparison.

For a band

A chord chart, with chords over lyrics and no melody on a staff, is enough for many bands, and it's quicker to write by ear. A lead sheet earns its cost when singers or horn players need to learn a melody they haven't heard.

For your own records

If you only want the song written down so you don't forget it, the free route is MuseScore Studio and your own ear. It costs an evening rather than money.

The software routes, and what they don't do

ScoreCloud Songwriter. ScoreCloud's plans chart lists "Notation from Audio Files", "Automatically add Chords" and "Export MusicXML" on its Songwriter plan, at $11.99 a month or $119 a year, as of September 2026. That's the closest thing to an automatic lead sheet from audio in this list. You still check the melody rhythm and each chord, and you type the lyrics; the plans chart doesn't mention lyric recognition.

Piano to Sheet Music, for songwriters who write at the piano. Our tool doesn't make lead sheets. It doesn't write chord symbols or lyrics. What it does is turn a solo piano recording into an engraved PDF on a grand staff, plus MIDI and MusicXML, for $4.99 per piece with no subscription. If your song lives in your piano part, that gives you the notes to build a lead sheet from in notation software: keep the melody line, name the chords from the left hand, and add the words. It's more of your own time than paying a transcriber, and much less money. You can try it here.

By ear, for free. MuseScore Studio is free, chord symbols take a keyboard shortcut, and a verse–chorus song repeats most of its harmony. If your ear is good, this is the cheapest route by far.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a lead sheet transcription cost?

Most services charge per minute of music. In September 2026, Music Notation Hub listed $18 to $25+ per minute with a $39 minimum, and My Sheet Music Transcriptions $15 to $29 per minute for vocal lead sheets with a $49 minimum. A three-and-a-half-minute song works out at roughly $50 to $100 at those rates.

Is a lead sheet cheaper than a piano transcription?

Usually, yes. At Music Notation Hub a lead sheet starts at $18 a minute against $19 to $49+ for piano and $35 to $50+ for piano with vocals. My Sheet Music Transcriptions lists vocal lead sheets at $15 to $29 a minute against $22 to $52+ for piano. Writing one melody line is less work than a full accompaniment.

How long does a lead sheet transcription take?

A few days. Music Notation Hub gives 2 to 5 business days, with rush delivery typically 1 to 2 business days. My Sheet Music Transcriptions states 1 to 2 days standard delivery with a rush service. PraiseCharts, for worship songs it can clear, says it posts custom charts within two weeks.

Not necessarily. The US Copyright Office's deposit page for unpublished musical compositions accepts one complete copy as a lead sheet or sheet music, or a phonorecord. A clear recording of the song can be the deposit. Whether a given deposit covers everything you claim is a question for the Office's guidance or a lawyer.

Can software make a lead sheet instead of paying a transcriber?

Some can produce a draft. ScoreCloud's plans chart lists notation from audio files and automatic chords on its Songwriter plan, $11.99 a month or $119 a year in September 2026. You still check the melody rhythm and chords yourself. Piano to Sheet Music doesn't make lead sheets; it writes out piano parts.

Are MIDI and MusicXML files included with a lead sheet?

It depends on the service. Music Notation Hub delivers a print-ready PDF and lists MIDI and MusicXML exports as add-ons. My Sheet Music Transcriptions' lead sheet pages list PDF, MIDI, Sibelius, Finale, MusicXML, MuseScore and Guitar Pro formats as included. Ask before ordering if you want to edit the file later.
