Transcription Subscriptions: The Real Cost per Song

Every transcription plan advertises a quota: 50 transcriptions a month, 60 minutes, 30 songs. Divide the price by that number and every plan looks cheap. The number that matters is different: the price divided by the songs you actually transcribe, including the months you transcribe nothing. This page does both divisions, from each vendor's own pricing page.

The plans, divided by their own quotas

Prices come from each vendor's own page on 16 September 2026. Pages show localised prices; where we saw euros, we print euros rather than convert. For plans metered in minutes, we assume a four-minute piece. "At full use" means every credit, every month.

PlanPrice as displayedQuotaCost per song at full use (our arithmetic)
Songscription Plus, monthly€8.99/mo60 min/mo (600 credits), up to 15 min per transcription€0.60 per 4-min piece (15 pieces)
Songscription Plus, yearly€86.90/yr before taxSame monthly quota€0.48 per 4-min piece (180 pieces)
Songscription Pro, monthly€25.99/mo300 min/mo (3,000 credits)€0.35 per 4-min piece (75 pieces)
Songscription Pro, yearly€260.95/yr before taxSame monthly quota€0.29 per 4-min piece (900 pieces)
Piano2Notes Pro, billed annually€5.83/mo (shown against €13.99)50 transcriptions/mo, songs up to 15 min€0.12 (€69.96 a year ÷ 600)
Klangio Ultimate, billed annually€11.67/mo (shown against €27.99)250 transcriptions/mo, includes Piano2Notes Pro€0.05 (€140.04 a year ÷ 3,000)
AnthemScore Web Plus, monthly$9.99/mo30 songs/mo, up to 6 min each$0.33
AnthemScore Web Plus, annual$8.33/mo billed annuallySame$0.28
AnthemScore Web Pro, monthly$29.99/mo100 songs/mo, up to 10 min each$0.30
AnthemScore Web Pro, annual$24.99/mo billed annuallySame$0.25

Three plans don't appear in the division because their pages state no song quota: ScoreCloud (Plus $5.99/mo, Songwriter $11.99/mo, Pro $20.99/mo), Melody Scanner (€13.99/mo or €69.99/yr for our region, recordings up to 5 minutes), and our own $9.99 unlimited plan. With no quota, the cost per song is just the price divided by what you use, which is the next section.

The catch: quotas reset, and you pay for the empty months

Every subscription above uses the same rule for unused credits, and each vendor says so plainly:

  • AnthemScore Web: "No, song credits reset at the beginning of each new billing cycle."
  • Klangio: "Your monthly ticket quota resets once a month for both monthly and annual subscriptions."
  • Songscription: its terms (last updated June 18, 2026) say subscription credits "expire at the end of each Billing Period".

So the per-song figures in that table are a best case, not a price. A plan with 50 transcriptions a month doesn't cost €0.12 per song if you use three of them.

Annual billing makes this sharper. It cuts the monthly rate (AnthemScore's FAQ puts the saving at "about 17%", and Songscription's toggle showed 19% off) but it moves the whole year's cost to the day you subscribe, while the monthly quota keeps resetting.

What an occasional user really pays

Here is the division that matters for most pianists: price divided by songs actually transcribed. Three usage patterns, all four-minute solo piano pieces. All figures are our arithmetic from the displayed prices; compare within a currency.

Pattern 1: one piece, once

RouteTotalPer piece
Songscription Plus, one month€8.99€8.99
AnthemScore Web Plus, one month$9.99$9.99
Klangio pack of 3 (2 left over)€5.99€5.99, or €2.00 if you use all three
Piano to Sheet Music$4.99$4.99

Remember to cancel the monthly plans. Songscription's terms say the subscription "will automatically renew", and that "YOUR CANCELLATION MUST BE RECEIVED BEFORE THE RENEWAL DATE IN ORDER TO AVOID CHARGE FOR THE NEXT SUBSCRIPTION PERIOD". AnthemScore Web says cancelled plans stay active until the end of the billing period.

Pattern 2: six pieces spread over a year

A teacher before recital season, a student with exam pieces, a songwriter with a handful of demos.

RouteTotal for the yearPer piece
Songscription Plus, subscribed only in the six months you need it€53.94€8.99
Songscription Plus, yearly€86.90€14.48
Piano2Notes Pro, billed annually€69.96€11.66
AnthemScore Web Plus, six separate months$59.94$9.99
AnthemScore Web Plus, annual$99.96$16.66
Klangio pack of 10 (4 left, no expiry)€11.99€2.00 for the six used
Piano to Sheet Music, per piece$29.94$4.99

The "subscribe only when you need it" rows assume you start and cancel a plan six times without forgetting once. Few people do, and each forgotten month adds a full month's price.

Pattern 3: twenty pieces a month, every month

A heavy user: a teacher transcribing lessons, a church musician, a transcriber.

RoutePer monthPer piece
Songscription PlusNot enough: 60 minutes covers 15 four-minute piecesn/a
Songscription Pro, monthly€25.99€1.30
Piano2Notes Pro, billed annually€5.83€0.29
AnthemScore Web Plus, monthly$9.99$0.50
Piano to Sheet Music, unlimited plan$9.99$0.50
Piano to Sheet Music, per piece$99.80$4.99

At this volume, per-piece pricing is the wrong choice, including ours. A plan wins by a wide margin.

Prepaid packs: the option the pricing tables don't show

This is the inconvenient part for a site that sells per piece. Klangio sells transcription packs as gift cards, and nothing stops you buying one for yourself. Its gift card page lists:

PackPrice as displayedPer transcription (our arithmetic)
3 transcriptions€5.99about €2.00
10 transcriptions€11.99about €1.20
50 transcriptions€27.99about €0.56
100 transcriptions€39.99about €0.40

The page says "The code can be redeemed any time and the transcriptions do not expire", and Klangio's tickets help page says gift-card tickets "can be used anytime you like". You choose one Klangio app when you redeem, Piano2Notes for piano.

For someone who likes Klangio's apps, a pack beats every per-piece price on this page, ours included. We compare the two approaches in more detail in piano transcription without a subscription, and Songscription's credit model, including its separately sold "Purchased Credits", in Songscription alternatives.

Where per-piece pricing fits

Piano to Sheet Music charges $4.99 per piece, no subscription, or $9.99 a month for unlimited pieces. Each piece comes back as an engraved PDF, MIDI and MusicXML, and the first 30 seconds of every recording are transcribed free. Where that sits in the numbers above, stated plainly:

  • More per piece than a fully used subscription, and more than a Klangio pack.
  • Less than a monthly plan bought for one piece, and far less than an annual plan used a handful of times.
  • No account balance to use up and nothing to cancel. You pay for the piece in front of you.
  • Built for solo piano. Songscription and Klangio's Ultimate plan cover many instruments; if you need guitar or drums as well, they are the better buy.

If your use is irregular and piano-only, you can use Piano to Sheet Music and check the free 30 seconds against your own recording.

The costs that don't show up in a per-song price

Length limits. A plan's quota is only useful if your piece fits. AnthemScore Web Plus caps songs at 6 minutes and Pro at 10; Songscription and Piano2Notes allow up to 15. A long piece on a short cap means splitting the recording.

Correction time. Every tool produces a draft. The cheapest transcription is the one that needs the least fixing, which depends more on the recording than on the plan. Our comparison of AI and human transcription covers where software drafts need the most work.

Your deadline. Software returns a draft quickly on any plan. If you're choosing between software and a person, how long music transcription takes sets out the wait for each.

The human alternative. If the piece needs a professional score, the comparison isn't €0.60 against $4.99 at all. Our pillar on what music transcription really costs covers human transcribers' per-minute rates.

How to choose, by volume

  1. Count last year's pieces, not the ones you hope to transcribe this year.
  2. Fewer than about one a month, piano only: per piece, or a small prepaid pack if you're happy in Klangio's apps.
  3. A burst of pieces in one month: one month of a plan, cancelled the same day you subscribe.
  4. Several pieces every month: a subscription, monthly first; switch to annual only after a few months of steady use.
  5. Many instruments: a multi-instrument plan such as Songscription or Klangio Ultimate, whatever the per-song maths says.

Frequently asked questions

Which transcription subscription is cheapest per song?

At full use, the plans with the biggest quotas are cheapest per song. By our arithmetic, Klangio's Ultimate plan billed annually works out to about €0.05 per transcription and Piano2Notes Pro to about €0.12, as of September 2026. Those figures assume you use every transcription, every month, for a year, which occasional users rarely do.

Do unused transcription credits roll over to the next month?

Not on the subscriptions we checked. AnthemScore Web says song credits reset at the start of each billing cycle, Klangio says its monthly ticket quota resets without carrying over, and Songscription's terms say subscription credits expire at the end of each billing period. Klangio's gift-card tickets are the exception: Klangio says they don't expire.

How much does one song cost on a transcription subscription?

It depends on how many you transcribe, not on the plan. One four-minute piece in a month on Songscription Plus costs the full €8.99; fifteen pieces cost about €0.60 each, since the plan includes 60 minutes. The same one-piece month costs $9.99 on AnthemScore Web Plus. Divide the price by what you really use, not by the quota.

Is it cheaper to pay per song or subscribe?

Subscribing is cheaper once you transcribe a few pieces a month, every month. Paying per piece is cheaper when use is irregular: a few pieces a year, or bursts before a recital or exam. Prepaid packs sit in between; Klangio's packs start at 3 transcriptions for €5.99 and, according to Klangio, don't expire.

Are annual transcription plans worth it?

Only if you will use the tool across most of the year. Annual billing lowers the monthly rate, 17% on AnthemScore Web by its own FAQ, but you pay up front and monthly quotas still reset. For six pieces in a year, Songscription Plus billed yearly costs €86.90 in total, about €14.48 per piece by our arithmetic.

What does Piano to Sheet Music cost per song?

$4.99 per piece, with no subscription, or $9.99 a month for unlimited pieces. That is more per piece than a fully used subscription or a large Klangio pack, and less than a monthly plan used once. The first 30 seconds of every recording are transcribed free, so you can check the result before paying.
