Melody Scanner Alternatives for Piano Recordings

Melody Scanner is easy to start with: open it in a browser or on your phone, record yourself playing, and a score appears. The wall comes quickly, though. The free plan records one minute and shows 40 bars, and the moment you want the whole piece, an upload of an existing recording, or a MIDI or MusicXML file, you are looking at a subscription.

Two rows in that table belong to the same company, and that shapes the whole decision.

What Melody Scanner's free tier really covers

Melody Scanner's pricing section lists the free plan as YouTube import, "Composition using AI", "Record up to 1 minute", "Sheets limited to 40 bars" and PDF export. The paid plans add five things: recording up to 5 minutes, uploading audio files (the page names mp3, m4a and ogg), viewing the full sheets, custom PDF export, and MIDI and MusicXML export.

For a pianist that has a few practical consequences:

• A phone recording you already made doesn't go in for free. Audio upload is a paid feature. On the free plan you record inside the app.
• Most pieces are longer than the free sheet. Melody Scanner's page itself puts 40 bars at "about 2 minutes". A slow ballad might fit; a sonata movement won't.
• The free PDF is the only file. If you want to fix wrong notes in MuseScore, you need MusicXML, and that is on the paid plans.
• Klangio's Melody Scanner FAQ says demo transcriptions can be repeated as many times as you like, so testing it costs nothing.

Melody Scanner is also broader than piano. It offers Lead Sheet, Arrangement and Universal modes and lists piano, guitar, flute, violin, saxophone, bass, singing and chords. Its homepage says "Currently only solo instruments are supported, no bands or orchestras", and calls piano "the most mature analysis mode" while quoting an accuracy figure for the algorithm. The page does not say how that figure was measured, so treat it as a vendor claim, not a benchmark. We publish no measured accuracy figure for any of these tools ourselves, so the reliable test is the same recording on each one.

The price depends on where you look

This is the part most comparison pages skip. On the same day, 16 September 2026, we saw four different prices for the same product:

Some of that is currency localisation, and the App Store listing prices in-app purchases separately from the website. We are not suggesting anything improper. The point is simply that the figure quoted on a review site, or in this article, may not be the one you are charged. Look at the checkout on the platform you will actually pay through before you subscribe.

One more detail from the App Store listing: it showed version 3.0.1, dated February 8, 2024, as the latest update, with a 1.7 average from 35 ratings. The browser app may be updated on a different schedule, so that date says nothing certain about the web version.

Staying with Klangio: Piano2Notes

If Melody Scanner's results suit you and only the plan bothers you, look at Klangio's piano app before you look anywhere else. Klangio's own Melody Scanner page points pianists to Piano2Notes as its dedicated piano tool, and Piano2Notes says it "can isolate and transcribe the piano part—even when other instruments are playing".

The bigger difference is how you can pay:

• Prepaid packs. Klangio's gift card page, which you can buy for yourself, showed 3 transcriptions for $4.99, 10 for $9.99, 50 for $24.99 and 100 for $49.99 when we loaded it. The page says "the transcriptions do not expire".
• Single transcriptions. Klangio's tickets help page lists upgrading a single demo transcription "without a subscription".
• Pro plan. Piano2Notes Pro showed €13.99 a month, or €5.83 a month billed annually, for 50 transcriptions a month.

The catch runs the other way too. Klangio's gift card FAQ says codes redeem in Piano2Notes, Guitar2Tabs and Sing2Notes only. Its tickets help page says "Melody Scanner is using a different system", and its subscriptions help page says Melody Scanner "is not included" in the all-apps subscription. By our arithmetic, the 3-pack works out to about $1.66 a transcription, which is cheaper per piece than we are. If you are happy inside Klangio's apps, that is a good deal.

Paying per piece: Piano to Sheet Music

This is our service, so weigh it accordingly. You upload one recording (MP3, WAV, M4A or a voice memo straight from your phone) and get the piece back as an engraved PDF on a grand staff, a MIDI file and a MusicXML file, all yours to keep. The price is $4.99 per piece, no subscription, or $9.99 a month for unlimited pieces if you convert several. The first 30 seconds of every recording are transcribed free, so you can check the result before paying.

Where it differs from Melody Scanner, plainly:

• Piano only. No guitar tabs, no flute mode, no YouTube import. If you need those, Melody Scanner or another Klangio app does more.
• Solo piano is the case we are built for. Our own FAQ says dense pedalling, heavy reverb or other instruments in the mix can need corrections.
• You edit in your own notation software. We hand over MusicXML for MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico rather than an in-app editor.
• No account balance to use up. You pay for the recording in front of you.

Paying once, or subscribing elsewhere

AnthemScore desktop is the one tool here you own outright. Lunaverus's purchase page says "No automatic or recurring charges are ever made" and that the activation key "has no expiration". Pick Professional (€40.36 as displayed for us) rather than Lite if you want MIDI and musicXML; Lite exports PDF only. It is a computer app, so the phone recording has to be moved to your laptop first.

AnthemScore Web runs in a browser "from any device". Plus was $8.33 a month billed annually for up to 30 songs of up to 6 minutes each; Pro was $24.99 a month billed annually for up to 100 songs of up to 10 minutes. There is a 14-day full-length trial.

Songscription meters minutes rather than songs. Plus was €8.99 a month for 600 credits, which the page equates to 60 minutes of transcription, with pieces up to 15 minutes long. It also exports Guitar Pro. We set it against Klangio's piano app in Piano2Notes vs Songscription.

ScoreCloud comes up in "apps like Melody Scanner" lists, but check which ScoreCloud you mean. Its support FAQ says the mobile app, ScoreCloud Express, "only handles monophonic audio input", meaning one note at a time, and that the mobile app is only available for iPhone and iPad. Polyphonic piano needs its desktop apps.

Basic Pitch from Spotify is free and runs in the browser, returning a MIDI file. It does not engrave a score, so you do the notation work in other software.

If you record on your phone

Most people who start on Melody Scanner record inside the app. When you move to a tool that takes an uploaded file, the recording itself becomes your job, and it matters more than which tool you pick. Melody Scanner's FAQ puts it simply: the better the quality of the music, the better the transcription.

• Solo piano, no singing along. Every tool in this list does better without other sounds in the mix.
• Phone close to the instrument, on the music stand or the lid, not across the room.
• Quiet room. Talk, TV and a clicking metronome can come back as stray notes.

• You like Melody Scanner and play several instruments: stay, but check the price on the platform you pay through. The four prices above differ by a lot.
• You only play piano and want Klangio's results without a plan: a Piano2Notes gift card pack, bought for yourself.
• One or two pieces, uploaded from your phone, no account balance: $4.99 per piece at Piano to Sheet Music, after the free 30 seconds.
• You transcribe every week and want no billing relationship: AnthemScore Professional, once.
• You are fine editing MIDI yourself: Basic Pitch, free.

Whichever you test, use the hardest 30 seconds of your piece, not the opening bars. That is where the tools differ.

Is Melody Scanner made by the same company as Piano2Notes?

Yes. Both are Klangio GmbH products, from Germany. They are billed separately, though: Klangio's help centre says Melody Scanner uses a different system from its tickets and is not part of its all-apps subscription, and its gift cards redeem only in Piano2Notes, Guitar2Tabs and Sing2Notes.

Can I use Klangio gift card transcriptions in Melody Scanner?

No. Klangio's gift card page says codes can be redeemed in Piano2Notes, Guitar2Tabs and Sing2Notes, and Melody Scanner is not on that list. If you want Klangio's piano transcription without a subscription, the pack has to be spent in Piano2Notes, which is Klangio's piano-specific app.

Is there a Melody Scanner alternative that works from a phone recording?

Yes, most of them. Piano2Notes has iOS and Android apps, and browser tools such as Songscription, AnthemScore Web and Piano to Sheet Music accept an audio file exported from your phone. ScoreCloud's Express app is the exception for piano: ScoreCloud says it only handles monophonic input, one note at a time.

What is the cheapest way to get sheet music from one piano recording?

For a single piece, a small prepaid pack or a per-piece price beats any subscription. Klangio's gift card page showed 3 transcriptions for $4.99, redeemable in Piano2Notes. Piano to Sheet Music charges $4.99 per piece with no subscription. Basic Pitch is free but returns MIDI, not a score.
