Piano2Notes Alternatives: Pay Per Piece, Not Monthly

Piano2Notes is one of the better-known ways to turn a piano recording into sheet music, and it is built for exactly that job. The usual reason people look for an alternative is the price model: the pricing block on its page shows a plan, and most people who search for this want one score, not a monthly bill.

Piano2Notes and its alternatives, side by side

Prices come from each vendor's own page, checked on 16 September 2026. Several pages show localised prices. Where a page showed euros for our region, we print euros rather than convert, so compare within a currency where you can.

Two things in that table are easy to miss, and both change the decision.

Klangio already sells transcriptions without a plan. Its help article on tickets lists three ways to get them: subscriptions, gift cards ("Gift your friends or yourself a bundle of tickets") and "Single Transcriptions – Upgrade a single transcription without a subscription." The Piano2Notes pricing block does not advertise this, so it is easy to assume the plan is the only way in.

Melody Scanner is not a separate company. Klangio lists it among its own products. It is billed on its own terms, and Klangio's subscription help says the Ultimate plan does not include it. If you are leaving Piano2Notes because of Klangio's model, Melody Scanner is not really leaving. What Piano2Notes does well

It is fair to start here, because an alternative is only worth switching to if it matches the parts you use.

• It is built for piano. Klangio says Piano2Notes "specializes in piano sheet transcription, even when other instruments are playing at the same time". If your source is a band recording with a piano part in it, that focus matters.
• The exports are the right ones. PDF, quantised or unquantised MIDI, and MusicXML "for MuseScore, Dorico & Sibelius", on the Pro plan.
• There is an editor. Edit Mode lets you fix notes before you download, and Klangio's own FAQ admits small errors happen, adding that "you can fix them instantly".
• The free demo is unlimited. It transcribes the first 20 seconds, as often as you like, so you can test it on your own recording.
• There is a refund window. The page shows a 14-day money-back guarantee.

If you transcribe a few pieces every month, the annual Pro plan is a reasonable price for all that. This page is about how you pay. We are not publishing an accuracy league table, because results depend so heavily on the recording; test each tool's free tier on your own piece.

Staying with Klangio, without the plan

This is the inconvenient part for us to write, so we will be plain about it. If you like Piano2Notes' output and just dislike subscriptions, the cheapest move may be a Klangio gift card bought for yourself.

By our arithmetic from the prices shown on its gift card page:

The gift card page says the code "allows the recipient to add the amount of purchased transcriptions to one of the apps", and that the transcriptions do not expire. The tickets help page confirms that gift-card tickets "can be used anytime you like", while subscription tickets reset monthly and "do not carry over or accumulate".

Two catches. You choose the app when you redeem, so a pack redeemed on Piano2Notes is spent on Piano2Notes. And you are still working inside Klangio's web or mobile app, with its account, its editor and its storage. If that suits you, it is a good deal, and the price per piece is lower than ours.

Paying once: AnthemScore desktop

AnthemScore is the only transcription app on this list you can own outright. Lunaverus's purchase page says "No automatic or recurring charges are ever made", that the activation key "has no expiration", and that after activation the software "can run offline forever".

The details that matter when comparing it with Piano2Notes:

• Pick Professional, not Lite, if you need to edit. Lite saves PDFs only. Professional adds MIDI and musicXML export and "Full suite of note editing tools".
• Updates are time-limited on Lite and Professional: one year. Studio has lifetime updates.
• It is a desktop app for Windows, Mac and Linux, usable on up to 4 computers.
• The trial is generous enough to judge it: the first 30 seconds of each song, for 100 transcriptions.

AnthemScore also sells a browser version, AnthemScore Web, which is a subscription. Plus is $9.99 a month for up to 30 songs of up to 6 minutes each. Paying per piece: Piano to Sheet Music

This is our service, so weigh what follows accordingly. Piano to Sheet Music charges $4.99 per piece, no subscription. You upload one recording (MP3, WAV, M4A or a phone voice memo), and the piece comes back as an engraved PDF on a grand staff, a MIDI file and a MusicXML file, all yours to keep. The first 30 seconds of every recording are transcribed free, so you can check it before paying. There is also a $9.99 monthly plan for unlimited pieces, for anyone who converts several a month.

Where it differs from Piano2Notes, honestly:

• No account-bound credits. You pay for the piece in front of you. Nothing resets at the end of a month.
• Solo piano is the case we are built for. Our own FAQ says other instruments in the mix, dense pedalling or heavy reverb can need corrections. If your source is a full band mix, Piano2Notes' stated focus on piano "even when other instruments are playing" may suit you better.
• You edit in your own notation software. We give you MusicXML for MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico, rather than an in-app editor.
• On price alone, Klangio's larger packs are cheaper per transcription. Ours is simpler for one or two pieces, and there is no pack to use up.

Other subscriptions, if a plan is fine but Klangio's isn't

Some people are happy to subscribe and just want a different app.

Songscription meters by minutes, not songs. Plus was €8.99 a month for 600 credits, which the page equates to "60 minutes of transcription", with transcriptions up to 15 minutes long. Our arithmetic: a four-minute piece uses a fifteenth of that allowance. It also exports Guitar Pro, which Piano2Notes does not. Cancelling keeps your plan until the end of the billing period. AnthemScore Web counts songs: 30 a month on Plus, 100 on Pro. The Pro plan includes the desktop app while subscribed, but Lunaverus says that desktop app "stops transcribing when the subscription ends", so it is not the same as owning a licence.

Melody Scanner is $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year, with uploads of MP3, M4A and OGG on paid plans. As noted above, it is a Klangio product.

Record it well before you pay anyone

Whichever tool you pick, a per-piece purchase only makes sense if the first conversion is the one you keep. Klangio's own FAQ says Piano2Notes performs best with "well-recorded, piano-focused music", and our FAQ says the same of ours: solo piano, recorded close, in a quiet room. None of that costs money.

• Record solo piano if you can. Singing along or a backing track adds notes the software has to separate.
• Put the phone close, on the music stand or the lid, not across the room where it picks up echo.
• Quiet room, no metronome bleeding in. Stray sounds can come back as stray notes.

Which one to choose

• One piece, now, and you don't want an account with credits: pay per piece. Test the free first 30 seconds at Piano to Sheet Music, or run the unlimited 20-second demo on Piano2Notes.
• You like Piano2Notes' results but hate the plan: buy a Klangio pack for yourself. It is the cheapest way to keep the same tool.
• You transcribe every week and want no billing relationship at all: AnthemScore Professional, once.

Whatever you choose, test with the hardest 20 or 30 seconds of your piece, not the opening bars. That is where the tools differ, and every one of them lets you try that part for free.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Piano2Notes cost?

Klangio's Piano2Notes page showed Pro at €5.83 a month billed annually, against a displayed price of €13.99, in September 2026. Pro includes 50 transcriptions a month, songs up to 15 minutes, and PDF, MIDI and MusicXML downloads. The free demo transcribes the first 20 seconds and can be used unlimited times.

Can I use Piano2Notes without a subscription?

Yes, though the pricing block does not show it. Klangio's help centre lists single transcriptions and gift cards as ways to get tickets without a subscription. Its gift card page sells packs from 3 transcriptions for €5.99, and says those transcriptions do not expire, unlike monthly subscription tickets.

What is the cheapest alternative to Piano2Notes?

Spotify's Basic Pitch costs nothing, but it gives you MIDI rather than sheet music, so you do the notation work. For an actual score, the cheapest route depends on volume: a small Klangio ticket pack, a one-time AnthemScore licence, or $4.99 per piece at Piano to Sheet Music.

Is there a one-time purchase instead of Piano2Notes?

AnthemScore's desktop app is sold once. Lunaverus states that no automatic or recurring charges are ever made. The Lite edition exports PDF only; Professional, shown at €40.36 for our region, adds MIDI and musicXML. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and includes one year of updates.

Do Piano2Notes tickets roll over if I don't use them?

Subscription tickets do not. Klangio says the monthly balance resets and unused tickets do not carry over or accumulate. If you cancel, remaining subscription tickets last until the end of the billing period. Tickets bought on a gift card are different: Klangio says they can be used any time and do not expire.

Is Melody Scanner a different company from Piano2Notes?

No. Klangio lists Melody Scanner among its own products, alongside Piano2Notes. It is billed separately, though: Klangio's help centre says the Ultimate subscription does not include Melody Scanner, and that Melody Scanner uses a different system from Klangio tickets, so a Piano2Notes plan or pack doesn't carry over to it.
