Songscription Alternatives for Piano, Priced per Song

Songscription is a capable transcription app with a wide instrument list, and for someone who transcribes every week its plans are reasonable. The people who go looking for an alternative usually have one or two piano pieces to write down. For them, a plan measured in monthly minutes that expire is an awkward way to pay.

Songscription and the alternatives, compared

Prices were checked on each vendor's own page on 16 September 2026. Pages show localised prices. Where we saw euros, we print euros rather than convert them.

How Songscription's minutes work

Songscription meters by time, not songs. The pricing page lists "600 credits / month" on Plus alongside "60 minutes of transcription", and "3000 credits / month" on Pro for 300 minutes. Each transcription can run up to 15 minutes.

By our arithmetic, that makes a four-minute piano piece 40 of Plus's 600 credits, so Plus covers about fifteen such pieces a month. For a heavy user, that is good value. For an occasional one, two clauses in its terms of service (last updated 18 June 2026) matter more:

• Subscription credits "expire at the end of each Billing Period", "do not roll over to subsequent Billing Periods and are forfeited if unused."
• The subscription "will automatically renew for successive periods", and "YOUR CANCELLATION MUST BE RECEIVED BEFORE THE RENEWAL DATE IN ORDER TO AVOID CHARGE FOR THE NEXT SUBSCRIPTION PERIOD."

So if you transcribe one four-minute piece in a month, you pay €8.99 for it and the other 56 minutes disappear. Take the yearly Plus plan to save money and you have paid €86.90 up front, whether you use it in March or not.

Here is the same arithmetic across a few volumes. Songscription's page showed euros for us and our price is in dollars, so read down each column rather than across.

Per-piece figures are the monthly price divided by pieces, rounded. Past a couple of pieces a month, the plan wins, and so does our own $9.99 unlimited plan. Per-piece pricing is for the months when you transcribe once, and for the people who only ever do.

The terms also describe Purchased Credits, bought "directly through the Service" for an "A La Carte Service". Purchased Credits "do not expire while your account remains active and in good standing", with exceptions, and the terms say they are "sold in denominations and at prices published on the Service at the time of purchase." That would be the pay-as-you-go route, but the pricing page we checked listed only Free, Plus, Pro and Enterprise, with no price for credits on their own. What Songscription does that the alternatives don't

A fair comparison starts with what you would lose by leaving.

• More instruments. Its FAQ lists "piano, guitar, bass, double bass, violin, flute, trumpet, saxophone, drums, and vocals".
• Mixed recordings, one part at a time. The FAQ says you can upload a piano-and-violin piece and extract the piano, then the violin. It adds that full orchestral transcription "isn't yet available".
• Link imports. It accepts YouTube, Instagram and TikTok links as well as files.
• An editor with hand reassignment. Its FAQ says every transcription opens in an editor where you can "fix pitches, move or delete notes, reassign notes between hands, and adjust timing".
• Guitar Pro export, for anyone writing tab as well as notation.

If you need those, stay, and choose the plan that matches your real monthly minutes. If you need a piano score from your own recording, you are paying for a lot you won't use.

Per piece: Piano to Sheet Music

This is our service, so read it as our description of our own product. Piano to Sheet Music does one job: a piano recording in, and an engraved PDF on a grand staff, a MIDI file and a MusicXML file out, for $4.99 per piece, no subscription. You can upload MP3, WAV, M4A or a phone voice memo. The first 30 seconds of every recording are transcribed free so you can check the result before paying. There is also a $9.99 monthly plan for unlimited pieces.

Compared with Songscription, honestly:

• Nothing expires. You pay for the piece you upload, and the files are yours to keep.
• Piano only. No guitar, drums or vocals, and no link imports.
• No in-app editor. You correct the MusicXML in MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico.
• Solo piano is what we're built for. Our FAQ says other instruments in the mix, dense pedalling or heavy reverb can need corrections.

When you are ready to try it on your own recording, you can upload one.

Prepaid: Klangio packs for Piano2Notes

Klangio's Piano2Notes is the closest piano-first rival, and like Songscription it is sold as a plan: Pro showed €5.83 a month billed annually, for 50 transcriptions a month. The difference is that Klangio also sells transcriptions outside a plan. Its help centre lists "Single Transcriptions – Upgrade a single transcription without a subscription", and its gift card page sells packs of 3, 10, 50 or 100 transcriptions for €5.99, €11.99, €27.99 and €39.99.

Klangio says gift-card tickets "can be used anytime you like" and do not expire, while subscription tickets reset monthly. Per transcription, by our arithmetic, the 3-pack works out at about €2.00, which undercuts our $4.99 on price. The catch is the account model: you redeem the pack on one app and work inside Klangio's platform. The two subscription tools are compared directly in Piano2Notes vs Songscription.

Once: AnthemScore desktop

AnthemScore is the one-time purchase in this field. Lunaverus's purchase page says "No automatic or recurring charges are ever made" and that after activation the software "can run offline forever". Professional (€40.36 as shown for our region) adds MIDI and musicXML export and a full set of note editing tools to Lite's PDF-only output. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, with one year of updates on Lite and Professional.

It suits a pianist who transcribes regularly and wants to own the tool. It is also a different kind of product from Songscription: desktop software you install, not a web app with link imports.

Other plans: ScoreCloud and AnthemScore Web

If a subscription is fine but Songscription's minute metering isn't, two plans count songs instead.

AnthemScore Web allows up to 30 songs a month on Plus ($9.99) and 100 on Pro ($29.99). Lunaverus says unused song credits "reset at the beginning of each new billing cycle", so the use-it-or-lose-it problem is the same.

ScoreCloud is worth reading carefully before you pay. Its plans chart puts "Audio file notation" and MusicXML export on Songwriter and Pro only, so starting from an MP3 means the $11.99-a-month Songwriter plan, not the cheaper Plus. Piano with a singer: test before you switch

This is where Songscription's multi-instrument design earns its price, and where piano-only tools need more care. A demo of you singing over your own piano part is a mixed recording. Songscription says it can pull out the piano on its own. Klangio says Piano2Notes "specializes in piano sheet transcription, even when other instruments are playing at the same time". None of those statements tells you how your song will come out, so test the hardest 30 seconds on each free tier. Better still, record a second take with piano alone, which transcribes cleanly on any tool. What transcribes when piano and vocals share one recording goes into the trade-offs.

Which to choose

• One or two piano pieces a year: pay per piece or buy a small pack. A month of Plus costs more than either for a single piece.
• You like Songscription and use it most months: stay, but compare your real minutes with Plus's 60 before renewing.
• Several instruments, band charts or tab: Songscription. The piano-only tools don't compete here.
• Every week, for years, and you'd rather own the software: AnthemScore Professional.
• You're comfortable editing MIDI by hand: Basic Pitch, free.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Songscription cost?

In September 2026 Songscription's pricing page showed Plus at €8.99 a month with 60 minutes of transcription, and Pro at €25.99 a month with 300 minutes, for our region. Billed yearly, Plus was €86.90 and Pro €260.95 before tax. The free plan gives unlimited 30-second transcriptions with no downloads.

Do unused Songscription minutes roll over?

No. Songscription's terms say subscription credits expire at the end of each billing period, do not roll over and are forfeited if unused. Credits bought directly, which the terms call Purchased Credits, do not expire while the account stays active, but the pricing page we checked showed no price for buying them.

What is a cheaper alternative to Songscription for one piano piece?

For a single piece, a per-piece or prepaid option costs less than a month of Plus. Piano to Sheet Music charges $4.99 per piece with no subscription. Klangio sells gift-card packs from 3 transcriptions for €5.99 that can be redeemed on Piano2Notes. Basic Pitch is free but gives you MIDI, not sheet music.

Can Songscription transcribe piano and vocals from the same recording?

Its FAQ says it handles multi-instrument recordings one instrument at a time: you extract the piano part, then another instrument separately. Vocals are on its supported list. Tools built only for piano, including ours, work best on solo piano, so for a song with a singer, test your recording on each free tier first.

Can I get a refund from Songscription?

Songscription's terms say fees are non-refundable except as required by law, and that credit purchases are final. Subscriptions renew automatically, and cancellation must be received before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. Its pricing FAQ says you keep plan features until the end of the current billing period.

Is there a one-time purchase instead of a Songscription plan?

AnthemScore's desktop app is bought once. Lunaverus says no automatic or recurring charges are ever made, and the Professional edition, shown at €40.36 for our region, exports PDF, MIDI and musicXML. It covers piano transcription on your own computer, not Songscription's other instruments or its link imports.
